PS218-15 Developmental Psychology
Introductory description
The module builds on the first year developmental section of 'Psychology in Context' by exploring current methods and research in infancy, childhood, adolescence and beyond.
Module aims
To develop students’ knowledge of major theories of development including cognitive, social, emotional, and linguistic development and to critically evaluate how these theories are empirically supported focusing on methodological issues, research design, and ethical considerations.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
We will include topics such as: Goals, theories, methods methods methods; Early beginnings; genes, environment, epigenetics, prenatal development; Perception and cognition; infancy to toddlerhood; Emergence of language; Emotional and social beginnings; Cognition and language continued; Emotional and social childhood; Atypical childhood; Adolescence; Beyond Adolescence
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Understand classical and contemporary theoretical views of child development.
- Describe and evaluate the main findings in developmental psychological research.
- Demonstrate how different influences interact in development

Each student will write a short weekly summary (approx. 100 words each) reflecting on what they learned throughout the developmental psychology module and how it relates to previous lecture content for this and other modules. Each entry will be weighted as 1% (10% in total) and marked as pass/fail. Up to three summaries can be waived, with MCs. |
