MD10X-120 MBChB Phase 1
Introductory description
Phase I learning is organised into a short (one week) introductory block followed by five five-week blocks focusing on the foundations of science and medicine.
Module aims
By the end of Phase I, students will understand the key scientific and professional principles of medicine and will be starting to work towards the requirements of the GMC outcomes for graduates (2018).
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
There are 6 blocks of learning in Phase I of the MB ChB course as follows:
- Welcome Week
- Health, Metabolism and Homeostasis
- Blood, Lungs and Heart
- Brain and Behaviour
- Locomotion
- Reproduction and Child Health
The syllabus of each of the above blocks is provided in the individual block approval forms.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate progress towards acquiring the professional knowledge required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase I as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.
- demonstrate progress towards acquiring the practical and professional skills required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase I as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.
- demonstrate progress towards acquiring the professional values and behaviours required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase I as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.

Feedback on assessment
Face to face feedback is available to those students who do not meet the summative examination pass threshold and is delivered in a timely manner. Individually tailored electronic feedback on performance in the summative examinations will be normally provided within 2 working days following the release of the results to the entire cohort.
There are also opportunities provided at regular intervals for individualised feedback on students’ progress towards completing the engagement criteria.
