Introductory description

Based on a step-by-step approach, this language course is divided into learning blocks that focus on practical, useful and manageable language. Activities will be devised to make sure you understand and can use the language presented during the lessons. You will put new language into practice via games, role-plays, and problem-solving tasks. The course is ideal for getting started before undertaking a first qualification or for those who just want the confidence to get by abroad. Homework tasks will be set at the end of each session.

Module aims

This beginners course will aim to develop competence in a range of predictable simple everyday language tasks, providing a very basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

formal and informal communication; greetings; asking and giving personal details; ordering food and drinks;
talking about work; talking about leisure time; expressing likes and preferences; describing a place; asking and giving directions; asking and telling the time; booking a hotel room; making complaints and offering solutions; describing a house; describing a town; booking holiday accommodation; talking about the weather.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • understand a range of familiar spoken phrases, simple questions and brief dialogues;
  • understand the main points in a short written text; understand simple forms for basic personal details; understand words and short phrases on common public notices;
  • respond to simple questions, share basic information about work, study, family or interests; make brief introductions and use basic greetings and polite expressions;
  • write short texts (emails, cards, text messages, posts...); fill in a simple form with personal details; write short sentences on familiar topics.

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.
