LL185-0 German Advanced
Introductory description
This course gives you an opportunity to demonstrate greater accuracy when speaking and writing. You will be encouraged to take part in discussions and debates and will be given the opportunity to exploit a range of complex texts and authentic audio-visual materials.
Pre-requisites: Successful completion of German Higher Intermediate or equivalent level B1
Description of entry level:
This course is for those who have good vocabulary and a fair understanding of fundamental grammatical rules and how to apply them. You may have done an advanced level course at school, at least A level or 5 years attendance at evening classes. You feel reasonably confident speaking in most common social or work settings and you are developing fluency in your reading and writing. You now want to use the language more flexibly and use appropriate register to suit the context. You also want to sort out in your mind (and on paper) some of the more complex grammar forms.
Module aims
To strengthen reading, writing, oral and listening skills; to develop a deeper understanding of various aspects of culture; to develop further your understanding and use of more advanced grammatical structures; to develop a more sophisticated range of vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms.
Outline syllabus

Communicative skills such as:
CVs; at home and travelling; German-speaking cultures; work and study;leisure;current affairs; places of interest in the German-speaking world; general cultural information.
Grammar skills will be revised when needed.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- follow extended speech of moderate length and complexity and summarise key points; recognise a wide range of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms and appreciate different styles and degrees of formality.
- understand a range of texts of some degree of complexity and abstraction, and note the key points; understand any articles given the occasional use of a dictionary.
- give clear detailed descriptions of complex subjects in the areas of work, study or special interests; participate effectively in extended discussions and debates on complex topics of personal, professional, social or cultural interests; argue a formal position convincingly, responding to questions and comments and answering counter arguments.
- write fluently and accurately on a wide range of topics related to my personal interests; write detailed letters choosing phrases that subtly reflect my mood; produce extended texts or reports on a range of topics in a variety of registers.
International
This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

Strategies for understanding gist and specific information; Intercultural competence; strategies to communicate effectively both in writing and orally in German

Communication skills: writing and oral presentation, defending one’s point of view.
Intellectual skills: critical thinking, analysis (Levels 4/5/Int Acc).
