Module aims

To provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Complete an undergraduate work placement.
  • Develop experience of, and confidence in, essential workplace skills.
  • Broaden their professional skills in a commercial, professional or industrial setting and develop these where they may previously have been used in an academic setting.
  • Experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of the workplace.
  • Improve foreign language skills [in placements where the language is not English].

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

This will vary for students depending on the approved placement and a job description should be provided by the placement provider. The syllabus will comprise undertaking the approved work placement and reflections on this experience will be distilled into one reflective report submission, and one annotated summative poster or video submission . The workload must be a minimum of 1,200 hours to maintain equivalence with that expected for a 120 credit module.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

This assessment will consist of a 1000 word reflective report based on the Skills Matrix template given. The report should record the student’s experiences of their initial work placement and should link to the Skills, Knowledge and Attributes they have gained, linking also to the learning outcomes of the module.

Annotated Video or Poster 50% Yes (extension)

Students are asked to produce a poster with a voice over narrative or a recorded video (no longer than 5 minutes) that should contain contextual information on their work placement, the cultural and professional environment and the skills developed in relation to the module outcomes and interpersonal skills gained.

Feedback on assessment

Students will receive written feedback through Tabula on their assessments.

Students will receive one virtual or face to face (dependent on circumstances) check in a term, in order to discuss progress and student experience.

Feedback on performance expected throughout the placement, may also be provided by the placement provider according to their HR processes.

Pre-requisites
  • Students must have secured a placement or placements (maximum 2) amounting to a minimum of 7 months in duration, in one academic year.
  • If placements involve work with children or vulnerable adults students must comply with any requirements for DBS and Enhanced Disclosure checks.
  • If placements are to take place in countries where the language is not English, satisfactory completion of appropriate courses offered through the Language Centre.
