Introductory description

Building on previous learning, Phase II learning is organised into three rotational clinical placement blocks that provide experience and learning of the principles of clinical practice.

Module aims

By the end of Phase II, students will be able to undertake a clinical assessment of a patient, apply their professional knowledge, skills and behaviours to demonstrate some of the GMC outcomes for graduates (2018).

There are 3 blocks of learning in Phase 2 of the MBChB course as follows:

  • Student Selected Component 1
  • Academic Blocks
  • Core Clinical Education
    The syllabus of each of the above blocks is provided in the individual block approval forms.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate progress towards acquiring the professional knowledge required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase II as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.
  • Demonstrate progress towards acquiring the practical and professional skills required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase II as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.
  • Demonstrate progress towards acquiring the professional values and behaviours required to meet the GMC outcomes for graduates, appropriate for the end of Phase II as set out in the learning outcomes for each block and theme.

In order to progress from Phase II to Phase III year 2 students must satisfy the engagement criteria for year 2.
There will be no compensation between the engagement criteria, and each of the written/clinical elements of any assessments.

Feedback on assessment

Face to face feedback is available to those students who do not meet the summative examination pass threshold and is delivered in a timely manner. Individually tailored electronic feedback on performance in the summative examinations will be normally provided within 2 working days following the release of the results to the entire cohort.

There are also opportunities provided at regular intervals for individualised feedback on students’ progress towards completing the engagement criteria.
