Introductory description

Social Studies provides a foundation of knowledge, understanding and skills that can be applied to a wide variety of professional areas. These areas include Social Work, Counselling, Coaching, Mentoring, Early Years and Teaching (compulsory and compulsory). This module facilitates the focussed exploration of one such chosen professional area.

Module aims

The module aims to:

  1. Frame and facilitate a learner-led critical study of a chosen social studies-related professional area
  2. Facilitate the development of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to the chosen professional area
  3. Encourage a critical reflection of how prior learning relates to the chosen professional area
  4. Encourage a critical analysis of how wider social studies-related topics relate to the chosen professional area

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Sessions 1 to 24 = learner-led seminars/workshops, guest speakers and/or scheduled 1:1 tutor meetings
Session 25 = Showcase event

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of contemporary theoretical and professional aspects of the chosen professional area
  • Evaluate contemporary policy and ethics frameworks and requirements related to the professional area
  • Show evidence of a critical understanding of how a range of contemporary issues, topics and/or experiences in social studies relate to the chosen professional area

Select and complete 3 optional tasks. 40% Yes (extension)

Students are to choose 3 tasks from the list below. The specific form of submission modality will be devised by the student in cooperation with the module leader.

  1. Interview someone with professional experience in your chosen area and discuss 3 key learning points you gained from them.
  2. Critically reflect upon any previous experiences that you’ve had in working within your chosen area.
  3. Role-play a scenario in which key aspects from the core tasks are highlighted and discuss them.
  4. Analyse the impact of COVID-19 and lockdowns on your chosen area and discuss any changes going forward as a result.
  5. Produce and carry out a survey on a topic within your chosen area and give a brief description of the main findings.
  6. List the top global and UK journals for your chosen area and critically analyse 1 article from a most recent edition of them.
  7. Critically analyse CPD or specialisation opportunities and/or requirements in your chosen area.
  8. Carry out a photo or video project of a topic within your chosen area.
  9. Produce a creative artefact concerning an aspect or issue within your chosen area with a discussion.
  10. Produce a “Game of Life” type board game for your chosen area.
  11. Consider 1 contemporary social issue as it relates to your chosen area (e.g., inequality, gender, race, disability, poverty, politics, marginalisation, ideology, cancelling, coercion, unions, etc.).
  12. Compare your chosen area to the equivalent area in a non-UK setting.
  13. Critically analyse a case study of a professional or service-user in your chosen area.
  14. Present and justify a set of recommendations for improving your chosen area.
  15. Critically reflect on your own motivations for selecting your chosen area and/or pursuing a career in it.

Feedback on assessment

Tutor feedback will be provided for formative and summative assessments in the form of written feedback on assessment drafts as well as regular verbal feedback within sessions. A feedback sheet will be completed for each summative assessment. Students will also be encouraged to engage in informal peer review.
