Introductory description

This module is for students taking a Full Integrated Year of Study Abroad on the North America Exchange through the Department of Politics and International Studies. The module is worth 15 CATS which count towards the integrated Year 2 of a 3 Year degree. As an integrated year abroad student, the marks you receive for your modules at the partner institution will be converted to Warwick marks and count toward the calculation of your degree classification. Students must take the equivalent of 8 x 15 CATS modules during the Integrated Year Abroad to total 120 CATS.

Module aims

To provide students with the opportunity to:
Demonstrate the ability to study abroad for a year at a host University approved by the department.
Experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of the host city and country.
Broaden understanding and knowledge of their subject specialism(s) through taking core and optional modules at the partner institution.
Travel abroad and achieve personal development in preparation for employment and global citizenship.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The syllabus will be arranged on an individual basis in consultation with the department and the host institution. It will normally comprise a combination of taught core modules and optional modules equivalent to the student's Second Year degree requirements at Warwick. Module choices are subject to the approval of the PAIS Director of External Affairs. Core modules must be equivalent to those taken by second year degree students when they are at Warwick and optional modules must be of an equivalent level to second year optional modules at Warwick. Any amendments to the approved study plan must be approved by the PAIS Director of External Affairs. Students are expected to take 8 modules during the year at the host institution equivalent to 15 CATS each at Warwick to total an equivalent of 120 credits for the year.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Broadened their knowledge and understanding of their subject specialism(s).
  • Developed the qualities and transferable skills necessary for working or studying in another country and in a different academic system.
  • Developed enhanced oral and written language skills through the demands of study in a different country.
  • Developed transferable skills in sensitivity to diversity in terms of culture and inter-cultural competencies.

Every student on the module spends a year at a partner institution in North America, or split year between two partner institutions.
