Introductory description

The dissertation offers a structured opportunity for independent learning on a topic of philosophical relevance. It is a particularly useful choice for students thinking of going on to graduate work, but it is also relevant for career destinations requiring skills in gathering and synthesising material.

Module aims

The overall aim is to write a 10,000 dissertation on a topic agreed between students and supervisors.

Students may choose their own subject.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Design and carry out a project involving research or a critical review in a chosen field
  • Develop a deep knowledge of the chosen research topic
  • Develop written communication skills
  • Develop time-management skills in the establishment of a research and writing plan
  • Develop research skills
  • Develop IT skills in presenting the dissertation and using on-line resources while researching the topic.
Research element

Students will be required to complete their own research on a subject of their choice.
