Introductory description

This module will provide a conceptual grounding of the core principles of corporate finance

Module aims

The principal modules aims are to:

Provide students with a conceptual grounding of the theories of capital structures
Offer a contextual understanding of the different theories underpinning funding decisions
Enable students to evaluate the relevant elements in a macroeconomic environment

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Key topics covered in the module will include:

  • A review of key types of financial assets. e.g. stocks, bonds

  • What is an exchange: understanding transactions and trading systems

  • The nature of Investment decisions

  • Practical aspects of investment decisions (taxation, inflation, real options)

  • Theory of share prices and cost of capital

  • ESG considerations in decision-making

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the theories of capital structures
  • Explain the different theories underpinning funding decisions
  • Challenge the concepts and models presented on the module
  • Critically evaluate the relevant elements in the macroeconomic environment
