IB9SW-15 Developing an Analytics Capability
Introductory description
This module explores the concept of "Developing an Analytics Capability" across two dimensions. Firstly, it focuses on the organisational challenge of developing an analytics function within the organisation, and implementing a data literate culture. Secondly, the module incorporates an individual's ability to develop their own analytics competencies, including topics such as an analytical mindset, reflexive practice and the ability to integrate one's work with organisational practice.
Module aims
The principle aims of the module are:
To provide a common foundation of understanding of the purpose, structure and roles within an organization to aid contextualization of analytical topics later in the course.
Students will develop a core understanding of the the role of analytics within an organisation and the ethics of analysis.
Students will also learn how to frame business decision making problems.

Introduction to organisational structures
Analytics and organisational structures/functions
Problem framing and structuring
Developing and growing an organisation's analytics capability
Ethical consideration for an organisation's analytical processes, and within an analyst's own practice
Managing and monitoring analytical outputs
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Provide a comprehensive explanation of the purposes and structures of organisations and the contribution that analytics can make within them
- Compare different functions within an organisation and their linkages
- Identify business problems and appraise their relevance within organisational functions
- Identify business situations where analytics may be applied while understanding the benefits and pitfalls of applying analytics
- Critically analyse analytics work undertaken in organisations
