Introductory description

This module provides students with an overview of contemporary global macroeconomic challenges in Europe and beyond. You will develop an understanding of how international institutions operate, with a particular focus on the European Union, as well as organisations with a broader global remit such as the WTO. The module introduces a range of macroeconomic theories and applications, covering topics including financial market integration, labour markets, international trade, and Optimum Currency Areas (OCA). It also examines the implications of the current geopolitical climate, including concerns that globalisation may be slowing or, in some cases, reversing. In this context, the module analyses examples of global economic de-integration such as Brexit and wider withdrawals from free trade agreements. You will gain skills and techniques to analyse problems relating to monetary policy using mainly a diagrammatic and intuitive approach.

The module aims to develop students' ability to analyse what is happening in the global macro economy. The module aims to use and build on ideas from core second–year modules.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The module focuses on aspects of macroeconomic policy and global economic integration, with emphasis on its conduct in the EU, investigating current policy issues, and considers the development of current policy thinking in the light of recent geopolitical events. The syllabus will typically cover the following topics: institutional integration, financial integration, international trade, labour markets, monetary union and theory of Optimum Currency Areas (OCA).

The Department of Economics is committed to providing high quality and timely feedback to students on their assessed work, to enable them to review and continuously improve their work. We are dedicated to ensuring feedback is returned to students within 20 University working days of their assessment deadline. Feedback for assignments is returned either on a standardised assessment feedback cover sheet which gives information both by tick boxes and by free comments or via free text comments on tabula, together with the annotated assignment. For tests and problem sets, students receive solutions as an important form of feedback and their marked assignment, with a breakdown of marks and comments by question and sub-question. Students are informed how to access their feedback, either by collecting from the Undergraduate Office or via tabula. Module leaders often provide generic feedback for the cohort outlining what was done well, less well, and what was expected on the assignment and any other common themes. This feedback also includes a cumulative distribution function with summary statistics so students can review their performance in relation to the cohort. This feedback is in addition to the individual-specific feedback on assessment performance.
