Introductory description

The Study Abroad year offers students the opportunity to spend a full academic year at an international partner institution, undertaking an approved programme of study equivalent to at least 120 CATS. It is designed to extend students’ academic development while enabling them to experience a different educational system and cultural context.

During the year, students broaden their subject knowledge, which may include interdisciplinary study where appropriate, and develop independence, adaptability, and intercultural awareness. The experience supports both academic progression and preparation for future employment in a global environment.

Module aims

The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Undertake a sustained programme of study at an approved international host institution
  • Develop understanding of the social and cultural context of their host country
  • Enhance language and communication skills, where relevant
  • Broaden and deepen their academic knowledge, including through interdisciplinary study where appropriate
  • Develop independence, adaptability, and personal effectiveness in preparation for employment and global citizenship

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The programme of study will be agreed on an individual basis in consultation with the department and the host institution, and must be approved by the Intercalated Year Co-ordinator.

It will normally comprise a combination of taught modules and, where appropriate, language study. Students are expected to undertake a full-time academic workload equivalent to that of a typical student at the host institution, amounting to at least 120 CATS.

Modules should not duplicate content previously studied at Warwick and should be selected to support appropriate academic progression on return.

The year is assessed on a Pass/Fail basis.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical understanding of areas of study undertaken at the host institution
  • Apply concepts and methods in an international academic context
  • Evaluate their academic and intercultural experience in relation to prior and ongoing study
  • Communicate effectively through a structured reflective report

International

Students undertake a period of study at a partner university outside the United Kingdom, engaging in an international academic environment as part of this module.

Subject specific skills

Students will be able to:

  • Apply subject knowledge in a different academic context
  • Integrate learning from the host institution with prior study
  • Engage with interdisciplinary perspectives, where appropriate

Transferable skills

Students will be able to:

  • Work and study effectively in an international context
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written forms, including in another language where applicable
  • Demonstrate awareness of cultural diversity and sensitivity in working with others
