Introductory description

This module is the equivalent of a level 7 module in Spanish at the Language Centre.
This module is designed to help students maximise fluency and accuracy in written and oral/aural Spanish and understanding of Hispanic society by analysing aspects of language and institutions, the way of life, culture, history and politics of Spain and Latin America.
This is the highest level you can study at the Language Centre.
Prior knowledge of Spanish required:
-Approximately C1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference for Languages).
-Advanced knowledge of French: i.e. a good A level or equivalent + 2 years of further study .
-Successful completion of Language Centre level 6 equivalent module (e.g. Spanish 6 through Translation, Spanish 6 through Film) .
-or equivalent.

Module aims

-To further develop communicative skills to enable students to reach a high level of language proficiency.
-To produce clear, well-structured detailed written and oral texts, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations.
-To enhance cultural awareness through the on-going analysis of current affairs and complex aspects of the contemporary Hispanic society.
-To build critical analytical skills.
-To work towards C1+/C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The module:
-is taught entirely in Spanish.
-is organised around studying and debating aspects of contemporary Spain and Latin America.
-requires students to keep up with the news, read a selection of documents and produce synthèses and essays related to the themes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a high level of language proficiency by articulating more fluently, confidently and spontaneously in Spanish in a variety of contexts.
  • Produce clear and well-structured oral and written texts about complex subjects, expanding and supporting points of view and relevant examples, and rounding off with an appropriate conclusion.
  • Identify and synthesise core arguments in texts and discussions, even on complex unfamiliar topics. Respond to questions and comments fluently, spontaneously and convincingly.
  • Apply high critical analytical, linguistic and socio-cultural awareness to the analysis of contemporary written and aural documents.

International

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

-Using appropriate resources (linguistic or technological) to produce accurate written assignments.

Feedback will be provided in the course of the module in a number of ways. Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
