Based on a step-by-step approach, this language course is divided into learning blocks that focus on practical, useful and manageable language.
You will put new language into practice via games, role-plays, and problem-solving tasks.
The course is ideal for getting started before undertaking a first qualification or for those who just want the confidence to get by abroad.
Homework tasks will be set at the end of each session.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The syllabus will include shaping the Arabic letters and joining them into meaningful words, thus enabling the learner to produce short phrases and sentences that will form the basics of short texts. The learning context will include greetings, politeness, family, professions, describing places, familiarisation with the Arab World and nationalities, describing a map, obtaining and giving directions, talking about likes and dislikes (food and drinks), hobbies and interests, public notices, numbers, shopping (fruits, vegetables, clothing & jewellery items), and the weather.
In terms of grammar, the learner will be introduced to personal and attached pronouns, basic sentence structure (noun[adjectives and subject-predicate phrases), prepositions and prepositions of location, "idafa" phrases, the present tense, interrogative particles and forming simple questions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

• Understand a range of familiar spoken phrases, simple questions and brief dialogues;
• understand the main points in a short written text; understand simple forms for basic personal details; understand words and short phrases on common public notices;
• respond to simple questions, share basic information about work, study, family or interests; make brief introductions and use basic greetings and polite expressions;
• write short texts (emails, cards, text messages, posts...); fill in a simple form with personal details; write short sentences on familiar topics.

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.
