Introductory description

This multi-term module aims to equip accounting and finance students with the essential employability skills and practical knowledge required to navigate the competitive job market in their field.

Module aims

Through a combination of workshops, networking events, and guest speakers, students will develop a strong professional profile, gain industry insights, and build valuable connections to enhance their career prospects in accounting and financial management. This module will help students in preparation to develop employability skills which will be used in their own personal and professional development within a role in the accounting and finance sector.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

This module is designed to enhance students’ professional skills and industry knowledge throughout the academic year. Through a variety of learning methods, including workshops, case studies, and interactive sessions, students will develop key competencies essential for success in the accounting and finance sector. Areas of focus include self-awareness, job application skills, networking, commercial awareness, leadership, ethics, and adaptability. The module gives students the space to explore their own professional development and networking opportunities, as well as allowing time to interact with a range of industry experts. Assessment is based on participation and reflective work, encouraging continuous engagement. By completing this module, students will develop a robust set of employability skills, preparing them for successful careers in accounting and financial management.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the accounting and financial management industry landscape, including current trends and career pathways.
  • Apply course knowledge to real-world professional scenarios, such as case studies, financial simulations, and mock negotiations.
  • Critically evaluate personal strengths, values, and career aspirations in the context of the accounting and financial management sector.
  • Analyse and adapt to ethical considerations and professional standards in finance.
