Introductory description

The research portfolio requires students to conduct an empirical and/or theoretical piece of independent research under the direction of a supervisor producing an original piece of work of publishable quality. The portfolio will be presented to an academic committee at the end of the second year of MRes study.

Module aims

The research portfolio is an empirical and/or theoretical piece of independent research that will provide MRes students with the experience of the cycle of academic research from design to write-up and presentation.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Reading will be determined by student's area of research.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced competence in formulating a valid research question at the forefront of the field and in designing an appropriate empirical and/or theoretical investigation.
  • Demonstrate advanced competence in conducting, writing-up and presenting an autonomous empirical and/or theoretical investigation.
  • Demonstrate competencies in academic writing and writing up research at the level, and in the appropriate format, for potential publication.
  • Advanced communication and presentation skills.
