Module aims
To prepare PhD in Finance students to do research in empirical corporate finance.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
The module focuses on selected topics of corporate finance in depth and illustrates the main empirical methodologies used in corporate finance. These include: natural experiments, difference in differences estimates, regression discontinuity design, structural estimation.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Understand and critically reflect on key and recent innovative empirical research in corporate finance.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of methodologies which are currently used in empirical corporate finance research.
- Critically evaluate the link between hypotheses building and methodological tools to test the hypotheses of empirical corporate finance research.
- Encourage and propagate creative thinking in terms of linking of different research ideas and questions.
- Effectively communicate ideas of academic research in both written and oral forms.
