Module aims

The principle aim of the module is that students synthesise, apply and extend the knowledge they have gained in the taught component of the course in a close-to-real-life experience. Working closely with the Gillmore Center for Financial Technology or one of its industry partners, students will be exposed to current business challenges of FinTech companies through a series of presentations and then tackle one of these challenges in a project. This will allow students to sharpen the skills learned in the course while gaining practical experience.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Students will be exposed to a series of events and seminars hosted by the Gillmore Center for Financial Technology where FinTech companies present their business model and current challenges.

Students choose an individual project that should be related to one of the challenges students learned about during the seminar presentations. The goal is to provide a solution to one of the identified challenges. Solutions can, but do not have to, be of the form of a programming code, a development of a new business model, or a whitepaper.
This module involves three trips to the Shard in London. The first two trips are four days each, students will be exposed to presentations of FinTech companies presenting their business models and current challenges. The last trip will be a three-day event where students present their solutions to faculty and industry representatives. Two of the days relate to this module; the other will be a day that all students on the course will attend.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Identify and then demonstrate an in-depth understanding and evaluation of current challenges faced by FinTech companies.
  • Critically interpret findings from a project.
