Introductory description

MD2A1-15 Tutorials for Integrated Science students. This module will fit into the revised SLS Year 2 structure and run in parallel with SLS provision to specifically support MSci Integrated Science students who will take Year 2 and Year 3 modules in SLS.

Module aims

This module extends the teaching of scientific writing and the art of scientific communication and presentation to second year students. Students are expected to use mostly primary literature in preparing for these assessments. The module aims to extend student’s ability to digest the primary literature on a variety of topics and to write and present in a scientific manner.
This module will also provide Integrated Science students with additional support for other second year modules, in particular through four SLS-led sessions giving an overview of core SLS modules, revision of SLS modules, and SLS exam tips.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

How to present scientific findings in the form of a talk, a research pitch and a journal club.
How scientific papers are published.
Deconstructing a scientific paper - content of each section; labelling figures and drafting a figure legend; writing an abstract; writing a materials and methods section; limitations and critical discussion

Exam tips and preparation, and the opportunity to take part in revision sessions for core SLS modules.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Write detailed and well-researched critical reviews of the primary literature.
  • Draft components of scientific papers and concisely summarise research findings
  • Research topics in the literature.
Subject specific skills

The students will apply integrated thinking across the sciences to topics related to infection dynamics, host and pathogen biology, and subjects relevant to Year 2 modules.
Knowing how to structure a scientific paper, write individual sections, abstract and title. Research and critically assess primary literature and write a critical review of a primary literature paper.

Short academic writing piece on specific tutorial task of deriving an abstract from figures or text of a paper, and suggesting suitable title from abstract and figures of a paper.

Feedback on assessment

Verbal feedback will be provided in tutorials on individual tutorial submissions by peers and the tutor. Essay and portfolio will be assessed and written feedback provided by the tutor.
