Introductory description

Students will enable a faster pace to learn and reinforce the basics of the Chinese language. This module will offer an opportunity to continue to work on basic sentence patterns, grammar and ways of expressions, to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in a range of predictable everyday tasks and to gain greater knowledge of Chinese society. Simplified Chinese characters will be taught and assessed. Successful completion of this module qualifies students to progress to Level 3.

Module aims

To enable students to acquire simple and more complex sentence patterns and ways of expressions.
To develop basic skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing in a range of predictable everyday situations.
To continue to develop strategies for learning Chinese.
To achieve A2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference).

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • exchange information orally on familiar topics and activities
  • write simple texts, messages and emails, using correct characters
  • understand spoken language in areas of immediate personal relevance
  • apply basic knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
  • understand texts dealing with descriptions of events and feelings

International

All modules delivered in SMLC are necessarily international. Students engage with themes and ideas from a culture other than that of the UK and employ their linguistic skills in the analysis of primary materials from a non-Anglophone context. Students will also be encouraged to draw on the experiences of visiting exchange students in the classroom and will frequently engage with theoretical and critical frameworks from across the world.

Subject specific skills

This module will develop students’ linguistic skills through engaging with primary materials in the target language, and will develop strategies for understanding gist and specific information and intercultural competence.

Feedback on assessment

Feedback will be provided in the course of the module in a number of ways. Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
