Introductory description

The module is designed to enable students who have demonstrated higher linguistic skills to fast-track two levels (levels 3 and 4) in one year instead of two.
The module will strengthen reading and writing skills and will also reinforce the communicative skills acquired during previous study of the Portuguese language. Students will gain further insights into the culture and civilisation of Portuguese-speaking countries. The module will offer a more advanced study of language structure and syntax, and will concentrate on using the target language for discussing and analysing aspects of Portuguese and society.

Prior knowledge of Portuguese:

● A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
● or a high grade in GCSE or equivalent
● or Language Centre Beginners Accelerated
● or equivalent.

Successful completion of Portuguese Intermediate Accelerated qualifies students to progress to Portuguese Advanced.
The module will facilitate students’ self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skill.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

This module will allow students to consolidate and refine their linguistic competence in Portuguese. Attention will be paid to the development of skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), grammar and vocabulary in realistic contexts. The organization of tasks with different ranges of complexity, which bring into play authentic materials, will favour meaningful uses of the language.

This syllabus is for indicative purposes only and will be updated regularly to remain relevant.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • apply knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
  • understand the main ideas and some detail of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics
  • interact with fluency and spontaneity, and account for and sustain viewpoints
  • write clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects; explain viewpoints on topical issues
  • demonstrate self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills.

International

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

This module will develop students’ language proficiency through engaging with primary materials in the target language.

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students.
