Introductory description

This module is offered to students with no prior knowledge of Portuguese.
This module is the equivalent of Portuguese 1 + Portuguese 2 combined.
Due to the 'accelerated' nature of the module, evidence of prior linguistic achievement (e.g. a high GCSE grade or A2 CEFR level in another European language) is essential.
Students will learn the basics of the Portuguese language.
This will offer an opportunity for students to develop their communicative competence in Portuguese. For those students intending to travel to Portuguese-speaking countries, either for study or on work placements, this fast-paced module can promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad and helps you achieve a higher level of proficiency in one year than in non-accelerated modules.
Successful completion of Portuguese Beginners Accelerated qualifies students to progress to Portuguese Intermediate Accelerated.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • ● to interact in a simple way and ask & answer questions on familiar topics
  • ● to write short simple texts, including personal details

International

All modules delivered in SMLC are necessarily international. Students engage with themes and ideas from a culture other than that of the UK and employ their linguistic skills in the analysis of primary materials from a non-Anglophone context. Students will also be encouraged to draw on the experiences of visiting exchange students in the classroom and will frequently engage with theoretical and critical frameworks from across the world.

Subject specific skills

This module will develop students’ language proficiency through engaging with primary materials in the target language. It will build students’ capacity to engage with aspects of modern language culture through analysis of this primary material and through seminar discussion aimed at deeper critical thinking. In particular, students’ awareness of Portuguese will be enhanced through lectures and seminars which engage in scholarship in the field.

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students.
