Introductory description

This module is offered to students with heritage background in Arabic through learning the Qur'an or through family background.
This module is the equivalent of Arabic 1 + Arabic 2 combined.
Due to the 'accelerated' nature of the module, evidence of prior linguistic achievement (e.g. a high GCSE grade or A2 CEFR level in another European language) is essential.
Students will learn the basics of the Arabic language.
This will offer an opportunity for students to develop their communicative competence in Arabic. For those students intending to travel to Arabic-speaking countries, either for study or on work placements, this fast-paced module can promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad and helps you achieve a higher level of proficiency in one year than in non-accelerated modules.
Successful completion of Arabic Beginners Accelerated qualifies students to progress to Arabic 3 .

  • to understand and communicate in familiar and routine situations, using frequently used expressions;

  • to achieve A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Communicative functions and grammar contents based on the textbooks used and available online material via Moodle. Content includes themes such as introductions, family, describing things and places, past events, shopping, daily routine, weather, future plans, holidays, jobs, travel and tourism, food and drinks, clothing and fashion, education, news and media, health issues, environment and arts and culture.
This syllabus is for indicative purposes only and will be updated regularly to remain relevant.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Apply basic knowledge of grammar
  • Gain an insight into everyday life in the relevant countries
  • Apply strategies for understanding gist and short description
  • Interact about familiar topics and activities
  • Write short simple texts giving background information and relating to areas of immediate need

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers. Feedback on interim test is given in class week 1 of term 2.
