Introductory description

Prerequisite: prior knowledge of French
- B2 of CEFR (to be finalised at diagnostic interview)
- or a high grade at A-level
- or equivalent in International Baccalaureate
- or Language Centre French 4 or Intermediate Accelerated
- or equivalent
This module is the equivalent of a level 5 module in French at the Language Centre.
It will strengthen reading and writing skills and reinforce the communicative skills acquired during previous study of the French language. It will focus on understanding French social, economic and political issues to enable students to engage with native speakers when visiting a French-speaking country and/or in a French speaking work environment. It will facilitate students’ self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skill.
Successful completion of French for Business 1 qualifies students to progress to a level 6 module (e.g. French for Business 2, French language through Films, French through Translation.)
Module aims
To communicate effectively in situations ranging from informal conversation to a formal interview or presentation
To write essays and formal, transactional, non personal emails in French
To read and understand business-related texts
To facilitate students’ self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills.
To achieve B2+ standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference).
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
The module is taught in French.
Themes - Activities will be centred on texts and audio-visual material focusing on such themes as: l'éducation supérieure, le monde du travail, les 30 glorieuses et les 40 désastreuses, politique économique, la France dans le monde, consommation et révolution du capitalisme, politique et institutions, les nouvelles technologies dans l'entreprise, films à dimension sociale.
Grammar - Consolidation of major elements, such as: gender, all tenses, hypotheses, passive voice, direct & indirect object pronouns, relative pronouns, conjunctions.

Feedback on assessment
Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
