Introductory description

This module is the equivalent of a level 6 module in Spanish at the Language Centre. This module provides entry for students wishing to progress through the Spanish pathway of the International Business degree.
The module offers a more advanced study of language structures and syntax and concentrates on using the Spanish language for discussing and analysing aspects of the business world and economic/financial topics. This module focuses on business and economic/financial issues, preparing students to work, study and interact in a variety of social contexts in Spanish-speaking countries.
We also permit other students with an interest in business to join the course, if there are places available and if they can demonstrate appropriate command of the language.
Prior knowledge of Spanish required: B2 level of the CEFR ( Common European Framework) or a good A level or equivalent plus one year of further study.
Successful completion of Spanish for Business 2 qualifies students to progress to Spanish for Business 3, Spanish language through Translation, Spanish Language for Contemporary Hispanic Culture, Spanish Language for Enterprise

Module aims

The module develops a good degree of competence in practical use of Spanish in a business context:
To communicate more effectively in Spanish in the business context, in situations ranging from informal conversation to formal interviews, negotiations and presentations.
To develop competence in reading a variety of texts dealing with business/economic/financial issues.
To gain practice producing clear, well-structured, detailed written and oral texts through the on-going analysis of business topics.
To work towards C1 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework.)

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Interact on a wide range of topics with a high level of language proficiency in Spanish. Spoken and written Spanish in a business context
  • Identify, synthesize and present complex arguments and points of view effectively in Spanish
  • Use a wide variety of business-related terminology, complex grammatical and syntactical structures in Spanish
  • Read and understand a variety of complex articles and business-related texts
  • Demonstrate a higher degree of intercultural awareness such as the economic, social and business in the Spanish-speaking world.

International

All modules delivered in SMLC are necessarily international. Students engage with themes and ideas from a culture other than that of the UK and employ their linguistic skills in the analysis of primary materials from a non-Anglophone context. Students will also be encouraged to draw on the experiences of visiting exchange students in the classroom and will frequently engage with theoretical and critical frameworks from across the world.

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
