Introductory description

The emphasis of the module will be on improving the following skills:

● communicating more effectively in Portuguese, in situations ranging from informal conversation to a formal interview or presentation;

● understanding extended speech (presentations, news reports, lectures...) and the majority of films in standard Portuguese;

● reading and understanding articles in Portuguese and a varied range of fictional and non-fictional passages;

● gaining practice in writing essays in Portuguese;

● writing formal, transactional, non personal emails in Portuguese;

● facilitating students’ self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills;

Prior knowledge of Portuguese:

● B2 of CEFR (to be finalised at diagnostic interview)
● or a high grade at A-level
● or Language Centre Portuguese Intermediate Accelerated
● or equivalent.

Module aims

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

This module covers topics such as: history and society of Portuguese-speaking countries; literature, music, film, and the arts; education: present and future models; family; work; colonial memory and space; equality and inequality; animal rights; freedom of speech; technology and privacy.

This syllabus is for indicative purposes only and will be updated regularly to remain relevant.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • develop competence in a broad range of complex and non-routine language tasks across a wide and often unpredictable variety of contexts
  • consolidate and expand grammatical and syntactical competence
  • become more proficient in using a wider range of register and style both in speaking and writing
  • demonstrate further awareness and appreciation of and Lusophone culture
  • develop an appreciation of literary and non-literary texts in Portuguese
  • demonstrate self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses in order to improve their learning skills.

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.
