Introductory description

Based on a step-by-step approach, the course is divided into learning blocks each of which focuses on practical, useful and manageable language.
You will access authentic texts and develop some understanding of society and culture.
You will develop cultural awareness.
Homework tasks will be set each week to consolidate what you have learnt in class.

Pre-requisite: successful completion of LLL French Lower intermediate or equivalent Level A2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference)

Description of entry level:
You will have completed over 150 hours of tuition or have had a good foundation at school in the language, at least GCSE level with grade A*or A or A-level up to grade C or equivalent. You have reached the stage where you can understand a good proportion of the language when native speakers talk to you about a range of common topics. You can express yourself simply and with reasonable accuracy but you are hesitant in more demanding situations. You want to develop your fluency and extend the range of contexts in which you use the language.

Module aims

To improve competence in an increasing range of factual and persuasive language tasks performed in a variety of contexts.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Communicative skills such as: Health and healthy life style; reporting problems, dealing with difficulties; the world of work; consumerism; the environment; art and culture

Grammar skills such as: Present tense; prepositions; pronouns; reflexive verbs; negative structures; temporal words and phrases; perfect and imperfect tenses; comparatives and superlatives; the future tense; the conditional; the subjunctive

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • - Understand spoken language relating to familiar topics in everyday situations; understand the gist of spoken language relating to unfamiliar topics; grasp the overall meaning of some audio-visual resources
  • - Grasp the overall meaning of some news items, articles and reports; readily grasp the essential meaning of texts relating to familiar topics; understand articles on a range of topics using appropriate reference resources.
  • - Start, maintain and close simple face-to-face conversations on familiar topics, using formal or informal language; handle some practical tasks including seeking and giving instructions; take part in discussions, sharing opinions, expressing feelings and making suggestions
  • - Write clear, detailed text on a range of subjects relating to personal interests, work or studies; write a short text developing simple lines of argument.

International

The module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work, which has been handed in by students.
