Introductory description
BS241-12 Assessments for SLS students.
Module aims
The module aims to extend students’ ability to digest the primary literature and to write in a scientific manner on a variety of topics. Students are encouraged to improve their written and oral presentation skills, and use of primary literature to research topics.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
Four research-led rotation tutorials, with different members of academic staff on a variety of research areas. Of these, two have a 1500 word written assessment, and one is an oral assessment.
Extended essay over the Christmas vacation (2000 words), topic to be decided by tutor.
Oral presentation skills – students present one of their rotation topics to their tutor.
Group oral presentation – deconstruction and critical analysis of a complex paper.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- By the end of the module, students will be able to write detailed and well-researched essays on a variety of topics, give short oral presentations related to topics in primary literature, and show development in their critical analytical skills.
Indicative reading list
Students are provided with detailed information (1-4 research papers) with which to produce tutorial work, begin to research their extended essay, or give an oral presentation. These papers are specific for every research-led tutorial and essay topic.
