Introductory description

The core dissertation module provides training and supervision for independent study, leading to a 15,000 word written project.

Module aims

The module aims to prepare MA students for and support them through the development and delivery of an independently researched dissertation project. The student receives advice from the start of the course, support from the personal tutor in choosing a topic, and then ongoing supervision from a a member of Departmental staff until Week 11 of the summer term. The dissertation is submitted at the end of August.

The dissertation offers an opportunity to undertake in-depth research and writing on an original topic in film and television studies, devised by the student and developed through discussion first with the personal tutor, and then the appointed supervisor for the project.

The student is encouraged to make use of the methodological approaches and critical and theoretical frameworks encountered during the course, and to explore areas new to them and which make a potential contribution to the disciplines.
