EP918-30 PGCE Secondary Professional Practice
Introductory description
The Professional Practice module continues to require all students to pass each of the Teachers’ Standards to be recommended for QTS. The revisions here ensure that this module meets the current statutory demands of the teaching profession and complies with the Centre for Teacher Education’s core values of creativity, social justice and curiosity.
Module aims
- To provide students with a range of high-quality opportunities to meet the statutory Teachers' Standards at a level appropriate for a newly-qualified teacher, enabling them to become effective, competent, professionally aware teachers in secondary education.
- To equip students with skills to select from and apply an appropriate range of teaching and learning strategies to ensure that learning is progressive and challenging for all learners.
- To develop and expand students' knowledge of subject pedagogy and how to apply it to successful learning in secondary education
- To develop reflective practice as fundamental evidence base for professional development and a necessary part of meeting the Teachers' Standards.
- To ensure that students who are recommended for QTS meet all the national statutory requirements and the Teachers' Standards.
- To develop students’ understanding and realisation of the appropriate professional characteristics and attributes for teaching
- To facilitate a research-informed critical engagement with practical classroom skills, using a range of resources and online technologies.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
There are 2 components for the assessment of this module, both of which must be passed for the module to be passed.
- A Level 6 (H) Online Portfolio – equivalent to 3000 words (pass/fail)
- The Department for Education's Teachers’ Standards, which result in trainees being recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Successful students will demonstrate secure knowledge that: LO1 Effective professional development is likely to be sustained over time, and involve expert support/coaching and opportunities for collaboration
- LO2 Teachers are key role models, who can influence the attitudes, values and behaviours of their students
- L03: Teachers have the ability to affect and improve the wellbeing, motivation and behaviour of their pupils
- L04 The ability to self-regulate emotionally affects pupils’ ability to learn and succeed in school and in their future life
- L05 Effective teaching can transform pupils’ knowledge, capabilities and beliefs about learning
- LO6 Reflective practice, supported by feedback from and observation of experienced colleagues, professional debate and learning from educational research is likely to support improvement
- LO7 Teachers can influence pupils’ resilience and beliefs about their ability to succeed by ensuring all pupils have the opportunity to experience meaningful success
- LO8 Teachers can make valuable contributions to the wider life of the school in a broad range of ways; including by supporting and developing effective professional relationships with colleagues

Feedback on assessment
Formative feedback on professional practice in the classroom is given via the following mechanisms:
- Weekly coaching meetings with school mentor
- Collaborative reviews at the end of each term
- Frequent reflection on coverage of the Core Content Framework for ITT
- Target-setting at the end of Professional Placement 1 that feeds forward into Placement 2
- Critical evaluation of professional practice through feedback following lesson observation
- Self-evaluation and reflection, guided by the coaching meeting
- Collaborative reflection, guided by the coaching meeting
- Use of video feedback, where possible
- Formative feedback is given at half-termly intervals on the 6 online tasks
