Introductory description

This module offers the opportunity to learn the basics of the classical Greek language and is designed to give students who have little or no previous experience a 'taster' of the language.

Module aims

The module aims to introduce students who have not previously studied Classical Greek to the main elements of the structure of Greek in a logical and systematic way, to provide them with the skills to enable them to read and translate simple ancient Greek with confidence.

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Private study description

Students are expected to do the majority of their work for this module outside classes. Class time will be devoted to introducing new concepts via reading, vocabulary and grammar work, and will be supplemented by tutorial groups. Students are advised that they should reckon on spending an average of at least 2 hours of private study between each class and will also need to spend some time during vacations to consolidate material in preparation for the December exam. Independent learning will typically involve: • written exercises set on topics introduced in the session • vocabulary acquisition • learning new endings and sentence structures • consolidation of recent material.
