SO373-15 Work Placement
Introductory description
This module includes training components (workshops) at the University, a self-sourced placement with employers on degree-relevant sectors and assessments through a reflective essay and poster presentation on the placement experience and acquired professional skills. This module starts during the Term 2 of Year 2 with a workshop on writing CV & Cover Letter; practice on writing applications with feedback and preparation for the workplace. Students take placements over the summer and enrol on the module in Year 3, with the assessments (reflective essay and poster) during Term 1.
Further Information:
- This module cannot be taken by students who have completed or have secured offers for a full-year or part-year internships or are intercalated year students.
- Places in this module are offered to students with a self-sourced summer placement, receiving guidance on their applications.
Module aims
To offer student opportunities to enhance and refine their skills on CV writing and applications process through workshops and seminars; gain work placement experience on relevant sectors; acquire key career skills in the workplace environment, e.g. on project & time management, team work and working to a brief; develop and reflect on transferable skills, such as tailoring CVs and applications, leadership skills, self-confidence, communications skills, and other soft skills.

- Gain a range of transferable skills and strengthen students' employability profile (tailoring CV and applications; applying thought skills to the workplace; self-confidence; presentation and communication skills).
- Gain a good understanding on how a professional workplace operates (team work; leadership skills; communications with managers and other employees; general soft skills for the workplace).
- Critically reflect on skills acquired through the module and placement and how this contributes to their career development.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
