Introductory description

This module includes a 4-week placement which renders students' degree professionally relevant, enabling students to develop real world employability skills and apply data analysis skills in a non-academic setting.

Module aims

To enable students to: • Undertake a 4-week work placement; • Prepare for consultancy work in quantitative analysis during their placement; • Reflecting on the transferable and disciplinary skills gained on the placement, and applying the learning back into the discipline in their third year work; • Gain a practical experience of working with numerical data in the workplace and appreciate their role.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

Workshops (introduction, CV design, statistical software, poster design) before and after the placement.

4-week placement.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Develop a range of transferable professional skills for future employment (e.g. CV design, job application, cover letter. etc.)
  • Develop a critical understanding of the role of data analysis in the workplace
  • Develop professional practice with clients
  • Become familiar with key terminology and soft skills associated with acting as a consultant in quantitative analysis

  • Sociology students: 45 CATS of quantitative methods modules, with marks 2.1 ("Upper Second") or higher in these modules.
  • PAIS students: 30 CATS of POQ coded modules, with marks 2.1 ("Upper Second") or higher in these modules.
  • Students need to provide a motivation letter for the placement.
