Introductory description

This module is for students taking an Intercalated Year through the Department of Politics and International Studies that is Part-Year Study and Part-Year Work Placement. Students are also registered on PO253 for the Part-Year Work Placement. This module is worth 60 CATS, which count as one half of the intercalated Year 3 of a 4 Year degree, but is assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. As an intercalated year student, the marks received for your modules at the partner institution will not be converted to Warwick marks and will not count toward the calculation of your degree classification. Students need to Pass the Study half of year abroad by taking the required number of modules at the partner and securing at least a Pass average for the semester/term. The module includes a remedy method for any students who do fail the semester of study.

Module aims

To provide students with the opportunity to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to study abroad for a part-year at a host University approved by the department.
  • Experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of the host city and country.
  • Improve foreign language skills [in exchanges where the language is not English].
  • Broaden understanding and knowledge of their subject specialism(s).
  • Travel abroad and achieve personal development in preparation for employment and global citizenship.
Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The syllabus will be arranged on an individual basis in consultation with the department and the host institution. It will normally comprise a combination of taught courses and any language training required. It is subject to the approval of the year abroad tutor. Modules selected must not duplicate those taken by students when they are at Warwick but must be chosen to provide adequate preparation for modules students will take when they return to Warwick. Any amendments to the approved study plan must be approved by the study abroad tutor. Students are expected to take the same total workload as that of a typical full time student at the host institution. Overall, during the year at both Warwick and the host institution abroad, the student’s study load must be equivalent to 60 credits at Warwick.
