Introductory description
This module will be offered to students who already have a good knowledge of Chinese from 6 months or more intensive study or work in the native speaking countries, AS level or lower grades of IB or A level, or those who have completed Chinese 3 or equivalent levels. It will give students the opportunity to build upon previously learned knowledge and use more complex grammar and sentence patterns and some formal register on a wider range of social, study and work-related topics. Simplified Chinese characters will be taught and assessed.
Module aims
To further develop linguistic and cultural competence in using Chinese in various social and study/work-related contexts
To understand ideas in complex texts
To produce text on topics on a wider range of topics
To work towards B2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference)

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- increase their intercultural knowledge and understanding of contemporary Chinese society
- develop their oral fluency and spontaneity in a range of predictable and unpredictable situations
- gather information from near authentic audio and textual materials of a variety of informal and some formal genres
- produce reasonably long essays on both social and study/work related topics, using simplified characters

International
All modules delivered in SMLC are necessarily international. Students engage with themes and ideas from a culture other than that of the UK and employ their linguistic skills in the analysis of primary materials from a non-Anglophone context. Students will also be encouraged to draw on the experiences of visiting exchange students in the classroom and will frequently engage with theoretical and critical frameworks from across the world.

Feedback on assessment
Feedback will be provided in the course of the module in a number of ways. Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
