Introductory description
Based on a step-by-step approach, this language course is divided into learning blocks that focus on practical, useful and manageable language. Activities will be devised to make sure you understand and can use the language presented during the lessons. You will put new language into practice via games, role-plays, and problem-solving tasks. The course is ideal for getting started before undertaking a first qualification or for those who just want the confidence to get by abroad. Homework tasks will be set at the end of each session.
Module aims
This beginners course will aim to develop competence in a range of predictable simple everyday language tasks, providing a very basic knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of the language.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
Communicative skills such as:
introductions; work and study; hobbies and leisure activities; likes and dislikes; ordering food and drinks; shopping; time; daily routines; booking a hotel room; making appointments.
Grammar skills such as:
numbers; verb conjugation; present tense; articles; plurals; question words; word order; pronouns; negation with "nicht" and "kein"; possessive adjectives; accusative case; separable verbs; modal verbs.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- understand a range of familiar spoken phrases, simple questions and short dialogues
- understand the main points in a short written text; understand simple forms for basic personal details; understand words and short phrases on common public notices
- answer simple questions and give basic information; ask and answer simple questions about place of work or study, job, family or interests;
- make basic introductions and use basic greetings and courtesy phrases.
- write short, simple text (postcards and emails); fill in a simple form with personal details; write short sentences on familiar topics
International
This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

Feedback on assessment
Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on progress test papers.
