IB9MI-15 Theorising and Publishing Qualitative Research
Introductory description
Developing strong and novel theoretical contributions is a critical requirement for publishing in top academic journals. This module positions students as qualitative researchers, and reflects upon processes of theorising and publishing qualitative research. Drawing on class exercises, practical assignments and readings, students will be trained in developing theory from qualitative data as well as develop skills in crafting papers for academic publications.
Module aims
To addresses the final phase of a qualitative research, namely how to move from data analysis to 'theorising'.
To introduce the students to the problematics and practicalities of 'theorising', 'writingup' data and then 'publishing' qualitative relevant and impactful research.
To position students as qualitative researchers, and teach skills that will be directly relevant for their MRes Research portfolio and later their PhD studies.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
This module follows on from the modules “Designing and Conducting Qualitative Research” and “Qualitative Data Analysis” and examines inductive theorising and theory construction in qualitative research in Business and Management.
During the module, the students will learn how to 'theorise' qualitative data, how to write up qualitative research, and will be introduced to the publishing process.

By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Recognise theorising as a phase of research.
- Recognise alternative modes of theorising.
- Practice theorising on data.
