Introductory description

This course will give you a chance to develop and practice your creativity in an encouraging atmosphere. It will be stretching and intellectually rigorous but also enjoyable. No prior art or creative writing training is assumed.

Module aims

To foster imagination and enjoyment through creative thinking.
To develop cognitive skills relating to idea generation.
The production of original work through application of creative theory.
Develop a critical-creative approach to writing and making.
Demonstrate a considered and coherent approach to the gathering, organisation, use and critical evaluation of relevant research material.
To provide a helpful, stimulating and thought provoking atmosphere to enable students to explore their creativity.
To develop critical understanding of the works of published writers and practising artists.

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

  • What is Creativity anyway? Is it the same as genius or talent or originality?
  • Challenging the idea of the creative person as individual genius.
  • Inspiration – where do ideas come from?
  • How might we become more Creative?
  • Has the human or secular notion of Creativity taken over from earlier divine senses of creation?
  • The relationship between Criticism and Creativity.
  • Manic depressive illness and the artistic temperament.
  • Creative responses to adversity.
  • The Unconscious.
  • Creativity and chaos.
  • Big C and Little C in creativity
  • Creativity as a potentially healing response.
  • Mainstream success and Creativity.
  • Is Creativity basically a form of play

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Critically discuss theoretical debates around creativity and it uses.
  • Use relevant literacy techniques to produce story and give reasoning for the decision made within the story
  • Develop a critical view of the works of published writers and practising artists and the use of propaganda art
  • Evidence the process of art making, through exploration, experimentation, problem solving and invention.
