Introductory description
Prerequisite: prior knowledge of French
- A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
- or a high grade in GCSE or equivalent
- or equivalent in International Baccalaureate
- or Language Centre French 2 or Beginners Accelerated
- or equivalent
This module will give students the chance to spend some time learning and reinforcing the basics of the French language. It will offer an opportunity for students not specialising in foreign languages to improve their communicative competence in French as a supplement to their studies in other spheres. For those students intending to travel to France or French-speaking countries, either for study or work placements, the module can work as a refresher and promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad.
Successful completion of French 3 qualifies students to progress to French 4.

Outline syllabus

Communicative skills: items such as describing people, social relations, work, employment, consummerism, the French language and multiculturalism, the media, the environment, art and tourism.
Grammar: items such as consolidation and revision of essential basic structures including present and past tenses, adjectives, object pronouns and relative pronouns, future and conditional tenses, the subjunctive and the passive voice.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- apply knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
- understand the main points on matters regularly encountered
- understand texts dealing with descriptions of events and feelings, and with work-related language
- enter unprepared into conversation, describe experiences and events and give reasons for opinions
- produce text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility

Feedback on assessment
Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers. Feedback on interim test is given in class week 1 of term 2.
