LL1A3-15 Introduction to French Language
Introductory description
Absolute beginners only. This module is offered to students with no prior knowledge of French.
Students will be introduced to basic forms of language in spoken form that are used in practical everyday situations. They will also learn basic linguistic tools for reading and writing.
Students will gain an insight into French society.
Successful completion qualifies students to enrol in French Beginners Accelerated or French 1 (where permitted).
Module aims
- to introduce students to the basics of the language in written and oral form
- to begin to develop strategies for language learning
- to raise intercultural awareness
- to equip students in survival linguistic skills
Outline syllabus

Basics of French culture to foster intercultural awareness.
Basics of communication such as : greetings, introducing oneself, counting, daily routine, making appointments, writing an email, organising a meeting, booking a hotel, buying a ticket, ordering food, likes and dislikes, personality traits...
Basics of grammar such as : genders, articles, adjectives, prepositions, sentence structure, the negative, present tense of regular verbs and common irregular verbs, asking basic questions...
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- grasp basic grammatical concepts
- present oneself orally to a partner abroad (video/audio)
- gain insight into aspects of everyday life in the relevant countries
- reflect self-critically on and evaluate the process of learning a foreign language
- develop basic language learning strategies

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback on coursework is given in Turnitin.
