Introductory description

  • Students will develop and practise basic reading and writing, listening and speaking skills.
  • Students will acquire a grounding in essential grammar and gain an insight into Arabic society.
  • The module is suitable for learners with no background in Arabic or for those with some background knowledge of few basic phrases and the alphabet.
  • Successful completion of Arabic 1 qualifies students to progress to Arabic 2.

  • to enable students to develop competence in a range of predictable everyday tasks;
  • to begin to develop strategies for language learning;
  • to achieve A1 and to work towards A2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference)

Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The syllabus will focus on daily predictable contexts, such as greetings and introductions, family, describing things and places, obtaining directions, talking about likes and dislikes, shopping, daily routine, education, weather, talking about future plans, etc. It will also introduce grammatical areas, such as personal and attached pronouns, present and past tenses, basic sentences structures, adjectives (comparative and superlative), "idafa" phrases, and verb patterns.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Apply a basic knowledge of grammar appropriate to the level
  • Develop strategies for understanding gist and specific information
  • Gain an insight into everyday life in the relevant countries
  • Understand short texts in the target language, dealing with everyday material
  • Interact in simple way , and ask and answer questions on familiar topics
  • Write short simple texts, including personal details

Feedback on assessment

Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers. Feedback on interim test is given in class week 1 of term 2.
