Introductory description
Students will develop and practise basic reading and writing, listening and speaking skills.
Students will acquire a grounding in essential grammar and gain an insight into society in Hispanic countries.
Successful completion of Spanish 1 qualifies students to progress to Spanish 2.
Module aims
- To enable students to develop competence in a range of predictable everyday tasks;
- To begin to develop strategies for language learning;
- To achieve A1 and to work towards A2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of reference).
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
Communicative skills: This module will cover items such as: greetings, introductions, asking for and giving personal information, asking for and giving directions, describing people and places, daily routine, likes and dislikes and ordering food.
Grammar: This module will provide an introduction to fundamental features of Spanish and essential basic structures, making it possible to function in a range of everyday situations using the present tense.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- apply a basic knowledge of grammar
- gain insight into everyday life in the relevant countries
- develop strategies for understanding gist and specific information
- interact in a simple way and ask & answer questions on familiar topics
- write short simple texts, including personal details
- diagnose strengths and weaknesses in their productive language skills and take relevant steps to address their weaknesses

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

Feedback on assessment
Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
