ET220-120 Work Placement/Volunteer Work Placement
Introductory description
This module offers students the opportunity to work in an organisation they are interested in and allows them to develop additional career relevant skills and to apply their previous learning to real world contexts. Students have the opportunity to choose to complete their placement aboard providing them with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of culture and their own skill in communicating interculturally.
Module aims
To provide students with the opportunity to
- Demonstrate the ability to use and develop their subject-related skills in work/volunteering contexts in the UK or abroad within a host institution/organisation approved by the department.
- Experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of a relevant work environment
- Improve bi / multilingual skills in a context where the student’s first language is not spoken, or communication skills in general if in a first language context
- Broaden understanding and knowledge of their subject specialism(s) through their application in a work/volunteering context
- Achieve personal development and acquire professional, communication and self-regulatory disciplines in preparation for employment and global citizenship.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Broadened their knowledge and understanding of their subject specialism(s) through experiencing their application in workplace/volunteering contexts.
- Developed the qualities and transferable skills necessary for working/volunteering in another country and in a different workplace culture.
- Developed enhanced oral and written language skills (either in English or a second language) associated with the professional community entered.
- Developed transferable skills in sensitivity to diversity in the workplace in terms of culture and inter-cultural competencies.
International
The module offers students the opportunity to complete their placement either in a global workplace in the UK or in a placement in another country. Either way it is designed to raise awareness in students that they are part of a global and interconnected world, and to give them the opportunity to learn relevant skills for working in such an international and connected world.
Subject specific skills
Subject specific skills will depend to some extent on the specific work placements that students choose to complete. In any case, they will acquire experiences and skills though that complement their studies, as they can test and explore the applicability of their learning to the workplace and can gain insights and inspiration from their workplace to their studies.
Transferable skills
Students learn a number of transferrable skills as part of this module. They acquire real work experience and with that knowledge of workplace procedures, communication skills, teamwork skills and time-management skills. They are very likely to acquire others depending on the specific workplace in which they complete their placement.

Reflective journal on student's experience during work placement period | 100% | Yes (extension) | |
The host institution/organisation will confirm that the student attended according to workplace requirements and fulfilled their duties competently. A reflective work/volunteering experience blog or e-portfolio of no less than 300 words to be submitted bi-monthly recording the student’s experiences of the placement. In addition, a final 3,000 word written summary related to the stated outcomes of the module. |
