ET219-120 Study Year Abroad
Introductory description
This module offers students the opportunity to study in a different education system and to experience life in a different society. Through living and studying abroad, they can deepen their understanding of culture and their own skill in communicating interculturally. Through attending a new university system, they also have access to additional courses and a lot of exposure to different people and contexts, which facilitates this further.
Module aims
To provide students with the opportunity to
- Demonstrate the ability to study abroad for a year at a host University approved by the department.
- Experience and gain a deeper understanding of the social and cultural environment of the host location and country.
- Improve bi / multilingual skills in a context where the student’s first language is not spoken, or communication skills in general if in a first language context
- Broaden understanding and knowledge of their subject specialism(s).
- Travel abroad and achieve personal development in preparation for employment and global citizenship.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
The syllabus will be arranged on an individual basis in consultation with the department and the host institution. It will normally comprise a combination of taught courses and any language training required. It is subject to the approval of the study abroad tutor. Modules selected must complement their programme at Warwick. Any amendments to the approved study plan must be approved by the study abroad tutor. Students are expected to take the same total workload as that of a typical full time student at the host institution and be equivalent to 120 credits at Warwick.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Broadened their knowledge and understanding of their subject specialism(s).
- Developed the qualities and transferable skills necessary for working or studying in another country and in a different academic system.
- Developed enhanced oral and written language skills through the demands of study in a different country, if applicable.
- Developed transferable skills in sensitivity to diversity in terms of culture and inter-cultural competencies.
International
The study abroad placement has to be completed with one of our University partners in another country. The module is designed to strengthen international ties and to raise awareness in students that they are part of a global and interconnected world, and to give them the opportunity to learn relevant skills for living in such an international and connected world.
Subject specific skills
Subject specific skills will depend to some extent on the specific courses that students choose to complete abroad. In any case, they will acquire experiences and skills that are crucial for their studies of languages and cultures and that will deepen their understanding of cultures and communication but also of themselves in what is usually the centre of their study material.
Transferable skills
Students learn a number of transferrable skills as part of this module. They acquire communication skills, intercultural awareness and skills, resilience, flexibility and language skills.
