Introductory description

This module develops a deep understanding of employee resourcing and talent management within the context of career development practice. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the resourcing and talent management processes with organisations and so be able to work with their clients to support them within these processes.

Module aims

Through a detailed and up-to-date understanding of organisational resourcing and talent development, students will gain a systematic understanding of the fundamental theories, models and skills relating to resourcing and talent management within organisations. The course will critique the role of employers in ethical recruitment and talent acquisition and explore how to equip students to navigate these processes and integrate this into their career development practice. The application of knowledge and skills will be critically assessed so that  students can work with their career development clients.  This module highlights thought-provoking contemporary issues and debates impacting international resourcing and talent development.

Outline syllabus

Introduction to the module, emphasising the integrated nature of employee resourcing, talent management and development.
Links with core modules (institutional and professional issues, theoretical perspectives and values) relating to Recruitment Practices and Talent Management.
Recruitment and resourcing, attracting and selecting individuals into a job role, considering an international perspective. 
Ethical considerations in recruitment and development.
Selection Methods: assessment stage of the resourcing process, including the role of competency/behavioural/values based interviewing, as well as other methods such as assessment centres, psychometric testing and the use of artificial intelligence.  
Talent management as internal career development, examining the role of talent management and development, succession planning and approaches for developing capable people into more senior positions.
Career derailers, examining theories of career derailment and mitigating the impact.  
How to work with clients who are participating recruitment and talent management processes.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Through a detailed and up-to-date understanding of organisational resourcing and talent development, students will gain a systematic understanding of the fundamental theories, models and skills relating to resourcing and talent management within organisations. The course will critique the role of employers in ethical recruitment and talent acquisition and explore how to equip students to navigate these processes and integrate this into their career development practice.   • Critically evaluate the knowledge, skills, behaviour and challenges faced by students, employers in talent acquisition and recruitment processes in the context of current employment market.
  • Creatively apply and integrate the knowledge and skills relating to resourcing and talent management into own career development professional practice.
  • Identify, describe, and evaluate the ethical issues in recruitment and talent management, and how to maximise the equality of opportunity in relation to recruitment and development
  • Communicate effectively by sharing information and discussing good practice in the design of Recruitment Practices and Talent Management, using the current course guides to presentation and referencing.

Subject specific skills

By the end of the module, students should have developed professional skills in the design and delivery of recruitment practices and talent management. Identify and evaluate, in depth, the knowledge, skills and behaviours of resourcing and talent management within organisations. Critically evaluate the knowledge and skills of resourcing and talent management, ethical considerations, and interpret these in relation to personal context. Creatively apply and integrate the knowledge and skills relating to resourcing and talent management into own professional practice, through critical reflection on, and evaluation of personal strengths, identifying areas for development. Present material in clear written form by identifying, analysing and applying key texts and practices using appropriate and adequate structure, spelling, grammar, syntax, length and referencing.

Transferable skills

By the end of the module, students should be able to communicate verbally in the effective delivery of recruitment practices and talent management; and in clear written form by critiquing recruitment practices and talent management practice using the current course guides to presentation and referencing. Exercise initiative and personal responsibility. Demonstrate a critical evaluation of complex theoretical concepts, and the ability to translate these into practice. Demonstrate sound judgement, decision-making and initiative in complex and unpredictable situations. Independent learning ability required for continuing professional development. Working through VLE blended learning Moodle material, reading, self-reflection and engaging synchronously and asynchronously with other students and the module tutor in webinar and tutorial.
