Introductory description

This is a part-year work placement, to be undertaken in the same year as a part-year abroad, giving students the opportunity to undertake both in their intercalated year.

Module aims

To provide students with the opportunity to

  • Complete an undergraduate work placement.
  • Develop experience of and confidence in essential workplace skills.
  • Develop in a commercial professional, industrial or other environment skills previously pursued in an academic setting.
  • Improve foreign language skills [in placements where the language is not English].
Outline syllabus

This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.

The syllabus will vary as each placement may be different. A job description should be provided by the placement provider. The syllabus will comprise undertaking the approved work placement and maintaining a monthly summary whilst on placement. The workload must be a minimum of 600 hours to maintain equivalence with that expected for a 60 credit module.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate: The application in a non-academic environment of critical, analytical and interpersonal skills developed in pursuit of their disciplinary studies.
  • Understanding of the work environment and their contribution to it.
  • Where appropriate, the development of social and cultural sensitivity and ethical awareness.
  • Understanding of how to apply work-based learning to other areas of personal development.

Using information collated throughout the placement in the reflective learning diary, you should submit ONE of these two outputs:

  1. a 2000*-word written summary related to the stated outcomes of the module. The summary should contain contextual information on the host organisation, a description of and reflection on the process undertaken to secure the placement, its development, any reports submitted by the placement provider, the skills developed and how they relate to personal, academic and career development.
    OR
  2. A 5-minute** vlog showcasing your placement experience. The vlog should contain contextual information on the host organisation and a description of your role. It could focus on reflecting on a skill (or skills) you developed and how this relates to personal, academic and career development. While the vlog could be in a Talking Head format, you should also be creative and include footage or images.
  • Students who completed less than 600 hours at their placement (but no less than 500) will submit a 2300-word reflection.

** Students who completed less than 600 hours in their placement (but not less than 500) will produce a 6-minute vlog.

Students will also be expected to present to their peers upon their return

Feedback on assessment

Students will be required to record their experiences and progress through a monthly reflective diary which will be read by the departmental placement officer. Feedback will be provided by the placement officer who will also provide assistance if required.
