Introductory description
Students will learn and reinforce the basics of the Spanish language.
This will offer an opportunity for students not specialising in foreign languages to improve their communicative competence in Spanish. For those students intending to travel to Spanish-speaking countries, either for study or on work placements, the module can work as a refresher and promote confidence-building for communicating with native speakers abroad.
Prior knowledge of Spanish required:
-A1 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
-or GCSE level
-or Language Centre Spanish 1
-or equivalent.
Successful completion of Spanish 2 qualifies students to progress to Spanish 3 or Spanish Intermediate Accelerated.
Module aims
- to understand and communicate in familiar and routine situations, using frequently used expressions;
- to develop strategies for language learning;
- to achieve A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Outline syllabus
This is an indicative module outline only to give an indication of the sort of topics that may be covered. Actual sessions held may differ.
Communicative skills: This module will cover topics such as: leisure activities, travelling, talking about past experiences, and celebrations.
Grammar: This module will cover consolidation and revision of essential basic structures including the Present Tense, adjectives and adverbs. The use of the Preterit, the Perfect and Imperfect Tenses to recount past events in a range of situations.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Apply a basic knowledge of grammar.
- Gain insight into everyday life in the relevant countries.
- Apply strategies for understanding gist and short descriptions.
- Interact about familiar topics and activities.
- Write simple texts giving background information and relating to areas of immediate need.

This module develops intercultural awareness and helps to prepare students for international student mobility.

Feedback on assessment
Verbal feedback is provided to the class regarding regular formative tasks set for homework and activities completed in class; individual written feedback is also provided for written work which has been handed in by students. Feedback is also provided orally and in writing on practice test papers.
