Introductory description
Students will develop and practise basic reading and writing, listening and speaking skills. Students will acquire a grounding in essential grammar and gain an insight into German society. Successful completion of German 1 qualifies students to progress to German 2.
Module aims
● to enable students to develop competence in a range of predictable everyday tasks;
● to begin to develop strategies for language learning;
● to achieve A1 and to work towards A2 standard of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)
Outline syllabus

Communication skills
This module will cover items such as: greetings, introductions, asking for and giving personal information, asking for and giving directions, describing people and places, daily routine, likes and dislikes, ordering food and drinks, booking a hotel, clothes, weather..
Grammar
This module will provide an introduction to fundamental features of German and essential basic structures, making it possible to function an a range of everyday situations using the present and past tense.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- apply a basic knowledge of grammar
- gain insight into everyday life in the relevant countries
- develop strategies for understanding gist and specific information
- interact in a simple way and ask and answer questions on familiar topics
- write short simple texts, including personal details

Feedback on assessment
Individual feedback for learning is given in writing for homework handed in by
students and practice exam papers. Feedback on interim test is given in class week 1
of term 2.
