Module aims
The aim of this half module is to introduce you to the main principles and policies of Competition Law in the United Kingdom (UK) and European Union (EU). Specific topics will be studied within the general themes of the legal framework, institutions and approaches to the regulation of specific anticompetitive conduct in the two main areas of anti-competitive conduct: Abuse of market power: Article 102 TFEU (EU) and Chap II Competition Act 1998 (UK) and anti-competitive agreements: Article 101 (EU) and Chap I (UK). The emphasis placed on EU and UK competition law will vary according to any divergence of UK law from EU law post-Brexit. No prior knowledge will be assumed.

Markets, market power and competition

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students should be able to:
- Identify and analyse the relevant legislation and case law applicable to the areas studied
- Critically assess and comment upon the effectiveness of the law and identify any weaknesses
- Independent research on competition law and policy in preparation for seminars and assessment
- Describe and evaluate the economic and political issues which influence UK and EU competition policy
- Contrast UK and EU law and explain their interrelation post-Brexit
- Apply the law to practical problems
- Present arguments orally in class
- Work collaboratively in class to complete a defined task
